Nine inches of rain fell on the farm in a week, and counties upstream got similar weather. The result was high water in both local rivers. Above is the railroad bridge over the Arkansas River.

Left: The Arkansas River runs high under the Summit Street Bridge.

Above: The Walnut River, out of its banks, covers Chestnut Avenue.

Above: Waders on East Chestnut Avenue.

Left: The East Chestnut Bridge leads to water.

Above: Flood waters cover Walnut Park.

Right: In 1879 the steamboat Aunt Sally made its way up the Arkansas River from Arkansas, and into the Walnut River. The cutout representing the Aunt Sally in Walnut Park looks unusually realistic surrounded by water.

A week of rain feeds a babbling brook in the woodlot.
